The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, October 27, 1984

 

Warmer today. I done up the Saturday work, made a chocolate layer cake. Carmen called. Kim went to work today. First time this week. She and Kim are having the Halloween party at their place tonight. Betty gone to North Conway shopping today (Christmas). David here this morning. Walt sawing his wood.

 

 

 

Sunday, October 28, 1984

 

A quite nice day, on the mild side. It was nice after clearing in a.m. then in PM it got cloudy again. I didn’t do much except the regular work. We cleaned the oven. Betty called and left the paper. Carmen called in PM. Kim had to work this weekend and tomorrow too. Billie been busy all day. Cleaned up the flower beds. Got a frog out of the well.

 

 

 

Monday, October 29, 1984

 

After a few clouds this forenoon it was a very nice sunny day. I got the refrigerator defrosted, cleaned in back of the stove and some windows washed. Quite a few other odd jobs done. The man from Dixon Brothers came to check our furnace today. We are going to have a new burner put in, also change and buy our fuel from them. Billie over to Norway today. He got David’s Christmas gift. Bill called at Betty’s.

Tuesday, October 30, 1984 27°

 

A real cold morning. I done up my work. Got ready. Betty, Carmen and I over to Norway on errands. Carmen went to the job center. We had dinner over there. Kim stayed with Fern. I did my ironing and other jobs. Steer came.
