The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 2 - 4, 1984

Sunday, December 2, 1984

A quite nice day. Some cloudy and a lot of sun at times. I done regular work. Carmen came for breakfast. I was glad she came. She done the chores down to Betty’s. Then she and Carmen cleaned up the barn. Betty, Carmen and Kim went down to Windham and got some Italian sandwiches for all our suppers. Brud called today. I worked at the desk getting the bills figured out, making out checks etc. Bill read. Billie done chores etc. Called at Fern’s. She is quite uptight. I feel sorry she is so upset.

Monday, December 3, 1984 Power went off tonight for about two hours

We had it all today, first a nice clear sunny day until about noon then got cloudy. In late PM it rained and then snowed. Betty called and Dorothea. Betty took Billie down to Dr. Gordon’s in Casco for his eyes to be checked. Other eye is getting bad, he will have to have them operated on. David to the Dr. for his shoulder. It is paining him a lot. Won’t work for three or four days. Zak and Walt got home at about 6 PM. Zak had a good time and enjoyed it all very much. He loved seeing the site at West Point. Also he enjoyed the sites on the way home. They went to Mount St. Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham Massachusetts where Walt was once a Catholic Minister. Zak up after he got home. He brought me up some very good candy. He was so tired.

Tuesday, December 4, 1984 KIM GOT A STEADY JOB, SNOW ALL OVER

When we got up everything far and near was drooping with heavy wet snow. It made a very pretty picture. Washed clothes, I got a boiled dinner ready to cook. This a.m. I made two pies, tarts and cinnamon roll. This PM Carmen and Kim called. Kim got a steady job at Pleasant Mountain cooking, waiting on tables etc. Good, we are pleased and she is too and proud. Carmen has worked most of the weekend and all.
