The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 17 - 19, 1984 Nanny and Poppa's 54th Anniversary

 

Wednesday, October 17, 1984

 

A very nice sunny day. I done up my work, washed, went down to Fern’s to babysit while Carmen went out looking for work. Betty cleaning house. Fern very weak, very depressed etc.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 18, 1984 54th Anniversary, new car, first egg, Dorothea Dave

 

A beautiful day. I done up the work and then down to Fern’s for a little while. Carmen went with Betty to Norway. Then Betty Smith stayed with her all PM. Today Dorothea and David got a brand-new Ford Escort station wagon. Maroon color. Very pretty, that is my favorite color. We got our first pullet egg today. To top it all off we went to Betty’s for a very good steak dinner for 54th anniversary. A beautiful cake and very pretty cards and a money tree $167. It was very nice. Bill, Billie, Dorothea, David, Betty, Milan, Carmen, Kim, Walt, Betty, Fern, Zak and I.





 

 

 

 

Friday, October 19, 1984

 

A very nice day. Sunny and mild. I did some washing. Milan working on fence. Bill and Betty over there too. I worked at my desk. I went down to Fern’s while Carmen went down to her apartment for an hour. Betty called this PM. I watched some programs.
