The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 31 - November 2, 1984

 

Wednesday, October 31, 1984 Carmen all done work, she is very glad

 

A nice day, sunny and mild. I got my work done. Then got ready, Betty, Kim and I went to get the new lady for Fern. She didn’t appeal to us same as the day she came for the interview. I hope she will be okay, time will tell. I brought my supper home from the market.

 

 



 

David and Dorothea got a brand-new car Ford Escort maroon, station wagon. It is beautiful. Also David got his tractor back which he had repaired.

 

 

Thursday, November 1, 1984 New Furnace Burner

 

A beautiful day. Clear etc. Today Carmen, Kim and Betty got a lot of the wood in. I done a dite of wash today. Cleaned up the house. A man came and put in a new burner for the furnace. It is working very good. Billie been very busy on his fall jobs. Bill to the Dr. for a sugar checkup. AT LAST the doctors said his sugar has dropped.

 

 

 

Friday, November 2, 1984 $537 SS checks

 

It was cloudy and showery this morning after raining last night then about noon it began to clear. It was nice but windy, sunny though. Quite cold tonight. We called at Fern’s. She is quite shook up about her new hired lady. I think in time she will be okay. Carmen, Kim and Betty got rest of the wood in today. It is cleaned up over there and looks very nice. Billie doing a lot of jobs. He is busy all the time. Bill cashed the checks today.
