The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, November 29, 1984

 

Welcome rain came today. It rained hard all forenoon and some in PM. Betty and Kim to town to do the shopping. They took Mary. I stayed with Fern. Dorothea came and brought her some medicine. Dorothea called in on her way home. Also she called at Betty’s.

 

 

 

Friday, November 30, 1984

 

A nice day, I washed and ironed. I did my windows, down to Fern’s a little while. Betty and I down to Sears and looked at a place on Portland Street. Came home, watched TV all PM.

 

 


 

Zak to the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for his problem again. Carmen got a job at the NCMH here in town part-time. She and Kim worked for Betty and Walt. Kim was laid off from her job at the drugstore. Hope she soon gets another. Fern had a very bad month, sick. I got my Christmas shopping done. Kim got her driver’s license. Zak brought home a very good report card all A’s and B’s except a half-point.

 

 

Saturday, December 1, 1984

 

Zak and Walt gone to New York, he is taking him to see West Point Academy. Also many many other places of interest. They will call on Walt’s brother and aunt. David called, they had coffee. He and Billie tried to start the tractor but couldn’t. Dorothea here, she went with Betty. Carmen called. Betty and I down to Fern’s. Carmen down to fix the horses and do chores. She will be alone tonight. Charlene called today.
