The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 26 - 29, 1984

 

Wednesday, December 26, 1984 cold and windy

 

A quite nice day, it was kind of on the hazy side until afternoon when it was clear and sunny. It was windy, which made it cold. I did the washing and defrosted the refrigerator. Billie in and out to town after milk etc. Bill to the eye Dr. and garage. Betty, Dorothea and Zak to Portland to exchange things. Kim worked today, Carmen working tonight. Walt got the new tires on the car today.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 27, 1984

 

A cloudy day. I been busy all day. I did a ironing. I cleaned my oven. I cleaned the cupboards etc. Carmen worked this forenoon and tonight at the hospital. Kim worked again today. Billie and Zak took the Christmas decorations down to Betty’s to be stored for the next year. Bill to the eye doctor for eye examination.

 

 

 

Friday, December 28, 1984

 

A cloudy rainy snowy dark dreary day. I done up regular work. I read one of the books from Betty. Bill read all day long. Billie done his regular work, to town etc. Carmen called. Kimmy working at the mountain today. Has all this week.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 29, 1984

 

I got up the usual time, did all the work. Washed floors, swept, dusted and other things. David came. Also Zak came. Carmen, Kim worked. Carmen up today.
