The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 20 - 23, 1985 THANKS TO CARMEN

Didn’t get up till 7:30. Done up the work and I got quite a lot done on the puzzle.

Monday, January 21, 1985 Barn WELL GONE DRY

The well went dry this morning. What a busted up day. Nothing worse than when the well goes dry. Carmen got a call to go to Lewiston for an interview at the CMG hospital. Also she was called in to work down here. Hospital. She and Kim came up. They got us some water from Betty’s. Betty, Carmen and Kim to Lewiston. I made a orange pie and did one load of wash. That sure didn’t help the well.

Tuesday, January 22, 1985

Cold and windy. I done up my regular work. Finished the puzzle. Did my ironing, vacuumed. Carmen got a call from Central Maine Power to come in for an interview. We are some pleased about that. Joy and Kathy gone to Keene, New Hampshire to go to a college for a interview. They tried to do something down in the field to find a leak in the pipe. It was too cold and windy.

Wednesday, January 23, 1985 WATER BACK, MILD, Carmen took test at CMP

This is been a nice mild day. Sunny. Those were some wind. Well Bill went down and started digging in the ditch. Then Carmen came and she went down to see how he was doing, she took hold and began to dig. She got a dug way to the pipe. It was hard work for her. I hope she didn’t upset her back. If it hadn’t been for her it wouldn’t have been done. So we called the plumber, he went down and put a new piece of pipe and we got water THANKS TO CARMEN. Billie uneasy all day, up to David’s a couple times. Dorothea, Betty and kids over to see the log cabin. Walt home sick today.
