The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 5 - 8, 1985 Carmen's Birthday

 

Tuesday, February 5, 1985 CARMEN CHRISTIE BOUTILIER HORTON 22 YEARS

 

Cloudy all day. I have been busy all day. I done up the housework. Made a sponge cake, brownies, a cabbage salad. Also had baked ham, lima beans, hot rolls and baked potatoes for supper. Chocolate milk, tea, milk and ice cream and cake. She enjoyed her supper very much. Kim down to Betty’s for the day and supper. David here this morning and tonight to do chores.

 

 

 

Wednesday, February 6, 1985

 

SNOWING when we got up. We had got a few inches. It soon cleared. Billie and Carmen to Portland for his eye checkup. He is doing okay, the Dr. told him he has to go back next week. I cleaned the electric stove oven. David came.

 

 

 

Thursday, February 7, 1985

 

A sunny day, but on the cold side, wind blowing at times, which made it very cold. I done up regular work. A lot of odds and end jobs. Carmen and Kim came up to Betty’s late this PM. Kim left her car so she can get it insured when she gets to work. Billie called at Clyde Rowe’s today. David came and done chores.

 

 

 

Friday, February 8, 1985

 

A very windy day and cold. I did a big wash and other odd jobs, watched shows and worked on puzzle. Betty is all upset about the kids today. No jobs, no place to live. She decided to ask Carmen about taking that real estate course, but hates to for fear Carmen thinks she is pushing her. Besides give her something to do and to meet people. Billie called at Clyde Rowe. David came down tonight. Billie done chores this morning.
