The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, January 24, 1985 Billie to MM Center, Zack haircut

 

A nice mild day, on the cloudy side. Sunny in PM. Billie to the Maine Medical Center today for an eye operation tomorrow. Carmen took him in. She saw Zenya. They had a dite of trouble getting him in. There wasn’t any beds. Finally they got one. Carmen and Kim down to Betty’s for supper. Kim did my shopping. She had a friend with her when she came to bring the groceries. Zack got his haircut after school. David came and did chores tonight.

 

 

 

Friday, January 25, 1985 Billie’s eye operation

 

Sunny. I did a big wash today. Billie was operated on his eye this morning, the Dr. (Reed) called me to say he was doing okay and the operation was okay. He will come home tomorrow he said if nothing new developed. Carmen here today. David came and done the chores today. Toward night it got cloudy and light snow showers. Betty and Carmen over to Otisfield riding around.

 

 

 

Saturday, January 26, 1985 clear and sunny, Billie came home

 

Billie came home from MMC a after eye operation. He is doing okay. I’ve been busy all day, done up all the work, made a cake, rolls, some very good red kidney beans. David here and done chores. Dorothea came, Carmen called. Kim and Zack worked on puzzles.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 27, 1985

 

A kind of a cloudy day. I done up regular work. Worked on puzzle, had company.
