The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 4 - 7, 1985

Monday, March 4, 1985 cloudy snow began tonight

 

I been busy. I did a wash and made a pie. Got supper to going. Watched TV soaps today on TV. Dorothea down to the meeting at the nursing home. Carmen and Kim down to Betty’s. They cleaned up the house and Kim got supper. Carmen was sick and went home. Betty still far from feeling better.

 

 

 

Tuesday, March 5, 1985 SNOW, NO SCHOOLS

 

A big storm last night, what a mess all around. It soon stopped, after last night about a foot of snow. I been washing all day. I got all the things washed I got down to Fern’s. I cooked a Swiss steak for supper, very good. Betty called us, she is much better at last. She has been quite sick with a very bad cold. No school today. Dorothea here today, called, also Kim and Carmen. Zack up and helped to shovel.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 6, 1985 Wrote Esther

 

Clear, cold and windy. I wrote to Esther, done up work, made a pudding. Did a wash and finished the ironing. The things that came from Fern’s are all washed and ironed. Dorothea and Kim came. Betty still better. Carmen is staying at Betty’s for supper. Kim got to go to work.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 7, 1985

 

Fair in a.m., clouded up in PM. I worked on the desk draws (Fern’s) today. Billie down to see Fern. Also Dorothea and Lorraine called on her. Bill read all day. It has started snowing this evening.
