The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Also Betty, Walt and Zak for Bill’s birthday. He got cigarettes, medicine, books, a cushion for his chair. A carton from Zak, carton from Billie. Money from Fern.

Has been quite a nice day. I got up early. Got my work done up. Got the washing to going. I prepared things for the steak supper. Zak is coming up. Dorothea came, she took me to town. I had to get a few things. Bill down to Woodrow Dobbins for the annual get together. I made preparations for a steak supper. We had Zak up. The supper was very good, Zak was pleased. He stayed all night, we watched the new year celebrations on TV.

Memo of Last Year

A lot of sickness in the family last year all through. A lot of hospital stays and operations. Bill, Billie, Zak, Fern, Betty, Walt and Kim in hospital this past year. Also our very dear and loved friend Dawn Nevers Babbitt. She died in early summer of a cancer. Billie had a operation on his veins. He was very sick. Zak had a very bad kidney problem, very sick, in hospital for a week. Betty had a touch of gout. Fern was sick, fell a couple of times. She is still weak and unable to care for herself. Dorothea to a doctor for her bad skin disease. She got relief then discovered she has sugar. So she’ll have to cure that or get it under control before she can finish her treatment for her skin. Bill is and has been in very bad condition because of the bleeding from inside as yet no doctor has found out what the cause is.

Another event of this past year was KIMBERLY ALLIE BOUTILIER HORTON graduated from LAKE REGION HIGH SCHOOL. SHE got a job at camp in Waterford this summer. She had a good job and done well. Then she moved in with Carmen at an apartment in town. She worked for Laverdiere’s drugstore for a short time. Then she got a job a Pleasant Mountain. Got her driver’s license too.

Carmen had a busy year and a up and down one. She hunted everywhere for work, finally got one at MWTR in Raymond. Then at Artel’s in Windham. She moved around a lot. Her boyfriend at the time moved into the shelter. Later on she moved in with him, which was the beginning of her downfall. I don’t believe in these move in unmarried relationships at all. It has put her in a bad spot. She got into trouble with her folks. They was ordered to move out of the shelter which she did finally get a rent in Portland while she worked at Artel’s. She went behind all the time because of Alan. He was a burden to her and everything fell on her shoulders to live and support. To cap it all he smashed her brand-new car. He owed Walt, Betty and Billie, still does. Walt went through trouble with him over car he bought through Walt. He was such a burden to them all. I hope the day will come when Carmen is going to see it all clearly. Carmen is a very good person, smart, a worker, a good planner, is bound to get ahead which I know she will some day. I hope she will meet a person her equal and marry, have a family as she wants and a nice home. I pray that to happen. I hate to see her suffer so much.

Zak worked hard all summer mowing lawns and helping with other work. In September he entered Lake Region High School. He is doing well up to now.

Esther came home from Florida this spring to care for Fern. Then she came also late in the summer. She did a lot of work at Susan’s. Susan began going to a beauty school in Portland. Doing very well thus far. I wish her the best.

Joy had a bad summer, stricken with a shock. I hope she continues to get better. Betty is on good terms with Joy now. I hope it will always be as good, now if only she gets back to Susan. I hope I see it before I die.

The town of Bridgton went to pot this past year. Warren’s market closed. Cardosi closed his store. Also other businesses etc. No hope ahead.

Dorothea and Dave got a brand-new car, Ford Escort. Dorothea went out of the antique business this year. David bought a tractor this summer.

Billie sold the good Guernsey cow this summer. She left July 5. A hard blow, we loved her as well as all the good milk and cream we got from her. He bought two steers from David.

We had a good summer, another nice big birthday. Picnics at twin Oaks, nice Thanksgiving at Dorothea and David’s, also the Christmas at Betty’s.

Billie bought me a brand-new electric stove, very pretty, it is good. Bill and Kim got a car this year.

Betty and Walt to Rhode Island many times to take care of Aunt Vi’s property. Walt had a good year doing soil testing.
