The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 25 - 27, 1985 Fern Goes to Nursing Home

Monday, February 25, 1985

A beautiful day. I got my washing done early. I got all the work done and watched programs then at 10 we went to Fern’s. We got her things looked over and ready to go. She checked her safe and desk all over. Carmen and Kim were there, they helped. We got a lot done. Vera took off for the day. Carmen had a call last night from a guy she said had a lot in common with. Billie out today. Bill down and got medication.

Today was kind of cloudy, some sun, windy, warm. First of the day. We went to Fern’s and cleaned out her cellar and garage. Billie had all of her tools. (Lloyd). He was very pleased with them. It was pitiful to see Fern knowing she was going to be leaving her home forever. Everyone faces these things as they turn to old age. I will someday too.

Wednesday, February 27, 1985 Fern

A quite nice day, it was cloudy in the forenoon. Finally the sun began to break through. Well today was a heartbreaking day. We entered Fern into the new nursing home care center here in Bridgton. It was a very hard thing to do. We felt so bad about her. It is all the best for her. She wanted to go too, knowing it was the best for her. Things got to be too much for her to face such as upkeep of her home, repairs etc. She did very well when she left. We got some of her things sorted out and picked over. We all love her and will see her often. Besides Kim works at the home.
