The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 29 - December 2, 1976 Lloyd Operated On

 

Monday, November 29, 1976 rained and turned to snow, Lloyd

 

We got about an inch of snow today, maybe a dite more. I went down to Betty’s early this morning. She went to Portland. It was very bad traveling before she got home. Susan and I went and got Fern and Lloyd. Lloyd is having a prostate gland operation. Betty, Zak and I down to Fern’s this evening.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 30, 1976

 

It dawned clear and cold with snow all over. I done up my work. I did some washing. Betty took Fern down to the hospital to see Lloyd. We wrapped gifts at Betty’s all a.m. Bill burning brush down to Walt’s pasture.

 

 

Wednesday, December 1, 1976 LLOYD OPERATED ON, KENNARD GONE 1YEAR

 

A nice day but quite cold. I done up my work. I went down to Betty’s until she went to the hospital with Fern to be with Lloyd. He had a hard day. In p.m. Betty and I went to Norway. I done rest of my shopping. Betty got hers about all done too. Keith came over in evening. Lloyd was very sick from the operation. He came out okay. Kennard died a year ago this morning. I did a big wash this forenoon. Bad snow storm in western parts of the country.

 

 

 

Thursday, December 2, 1976

 

Cloudy and snow started early in a.m. Betty and I went down to Dawn’s and got Buttons (Joy’s cat) and then we, well, Betty called to see Lloyd. He want very good, under heavy sedation. In p.m. we wrapped gifts at Betty’s.
