The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

This is been a busy day. I went shopping, done a lot of jobs preparing for Christmas. Kimmy up here a little while. Betty and kids cleaned up Betty’s house. Betty and I called at Fern’s in evening. Billie home early and he took Chet’s gifts up to him. Lloyd had a bad spell this p.m. Betty and Bill was called, he fell. Also tonight while Betty and I called at Fern’s, Lloyd had another bad spell. Called the Dr., he called the hospital and ambulance and took him to the hospital. He had a serious spell.

Friday, December 24, 1976 HAIR SET

This has been a very nice busy day. I done my cooking. I got my hair set, called at Fern’s. Betty combed her hair out, June set it last night. I cleaned up the house, done one million and some last-minute things. Got a early supper and down to Fern’s at about 6:30. The rest didn’t get there until late. Especially Dorothea and David. The reason was because they brought up my big gift, a CORNER cupboard for the living room. I love it. We had a nice time at Fern’s, then all came up here (Betty, Walt and children, Susan, Billie and Susan’s children, Bill, Billie and me, Dorothea and David, we missed Lloyd.) We had a lot of very nice gifts and a lot of them. We had refreshments. Fern stayed here all night. Betty and kids cleaned my house up for me.

Finally noticing the corner cupboard

They all got a lot of very nice gifts and they are all very pleased with it everything. We got dinner, Carmen and Kimmy both helped and they was a big help. Also Betty done a lot to help too. We had turkey, pork, gravies, turnip, squash, onions, turnip, shell beans, celery, salad so good. Hot rolls, dark, pumpkin bread, pies, cakes etc. The Horton family, Bill and I and Fern were the only ones there. Jeff came up later. It was a very nice day. When we got home we took the tree out and I am very lame. We missed Lloyd. Betty and Fern saw him at the hospital.
