The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A most beautiful day. Bills cold still bad. Billie cleaned the barn out. Carmen up for breakfast. Billie got a new cow from Lawrence. We went to see Lloyd. He is much improved, sitting up and about. Monday, March 21, 1977 a nice day, cloudy early

When we got up it was cloudy but cleared right out. A dusting of snow last night. I did a wash and I ironed. Betty to coffee group in a.m., to animal meeting in p.m. A very nice day.

Tuesday, March 22, 1977 BILLIE 46

I have been quite busy all day getting ready for tonight. I did some cooking etc. We had steak, salad, baked potatoes, peas, popovers. After supper we had the ice cream and cake. Fern was here for supper. She brought a nice cake, a daffodil cake, very good. Then the Horton family came up after supper for opening of the gifts and cake and ice cream. It was very nice. Fern to see Lloyd, he wasn’t as good. Irma took her over.

Wednesday, March 23, 1977 CLOUDY + SNOW + WIND

What a mess this morning when we got up, after the heavy snowfall last night and very heavy winds. It looked sickening. Bill plowed some. I took care of Monica. Susan took Hank to Portland to the doctors. NO SCHOOL. Kim up here in p.m. It has been mostly cloudy, windy and light snow flurries. A dite of sun. Walt didn’t work.
