The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 8 - 11, 1977

Tuesday, March 8, 1977

 

A nice sunny day. I done regular work, did some ironing and a big wash. I made an apple sauce cake for supper. Betty to Portland for another dentist appointment. She has had a tooth all overhauled. Bill home today waiting for Mr. Jones, the furnace man to come. He never did come. I had Chris and Monica this p.m. while Susan took Fern over to Andrews Nursing Home in South Paris to see Lloyd. He is better physically today. Chris is sick today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 9, 1977 Very mild, Hair set

 

A very nice mild day. The snow melted all day. I did my ironing, went over to Janet’s and got my hair set. Came home and worked on the puzzle some. Susan and children called. Chris went to school, he still has an awful cold and don’t look good or he doesn’t feel good. Betty to an all day meeting. They came and worked on the furnace.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 10, 1977

 

Betty to Bridgton in a.m. Then we took Fern to see Lloyd. Betty done some shopping. Lloyd about the same. In p.m. Bev called at Betty’s. Bill up to lake today painting at Camp Coda.

Friday, March 11, 1977

 

A quite nice day. I done a dite of wash. I done up a few jobs, went to town. Then Bill and I went to Norway and Paris to get a part for the tractor. We called to see Lloyd, about the same. He looks bad. Betty home all day and cleaned up her house.
