The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 16 - 19, 1977 Saturday School

Wednesday, March 16, 1977 cloudy and rain, Walt to Rhode Island for overnight

 

Until late in p.m. we saw the sun. It cleared off some. It became colder and windy. It was cloudy and rained all day. In p.m. I was down to Betty’s. There was only half day of school. Betty, Carmen and Bev went to Portland and got their cages. Also Carmen got some new dungarees and some new records. Kim was disappointed she didn’t get to go. Walt gone to Rhode Island for a funeral. He will be gone overnight.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 17, 1977

 

A quite nice day. I did some washing and ironing, cooked etc. School all day today. Susan took Fern to see Lloyd. I had Chris and Monica. Bill has quite a cold. Betty busy.

 

 

 

Friday, March 18, 1977

 

It has been cloudy all day. I got my work done, got ready, went to town early. Came home and washed my windows. I dusted very early. Betty has had a lot of callers today. I done some reading in my book today.

 

 

 

Saturday, March 19, 1977 School Kept

 

 

Fair but windy. I changed the beds, made bread, rolls, cake and pie. Swept, washed floors and other little jobs. Billie down to Lawrence and over to Fryeburg to get some meat. Not as much snow as was expected here. School kept until one today. Fern got a call, Lloyd had a bad stroke. Bill took Fern and me over. He came to after a while, will be all right now.
