The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, January 1, 1977

 

A partly cloudy day. Windy, we had company. Verna, Dorothea and Dave, they brought King up and buried him. Betty’s family was here. In p.m. Betty, Dorothea and I to see Lloyd at NCH, he is bad. Also saw Jack, he had a stroke. Also Bert Downey heart and Alice Record a heart condition. Had a birthday supper for Bill, we had a very good time. Billie busy. Kim went home tonight.

 

 

 

Sunday, January 2, 1977

 

A nice mild sunny day. I done up my work, washed kitchen floor. Cleaned house up good. Down to see Lloyd. Fern went today, he isn’t at all good. Billie up to Chet’s. He is real good this winter. Had a nice Christmas.

 

 

 

Monday, January 3, 1977

 

I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned her whole house up. It took all day. Billie home today for the holiday. He hauled sawdust. Did other jobs. Bill and Ilan up to the lake fishing. I done a wash today. It was nice and mild. Down to see Lloyd today, he was fair. He hates to go to Portland.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 4, 1977

 

A nice day. I washed, done a dite of cooking and cleaned up the house. Bill and Ilan gone ice fishing.
