The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 28 - March 3, 1977 Lloyd To Nursing Home

Monday, February 28, 1977

A very nice day after the clouds broke away in a.m. I did another washing. Susan brought the kids over and then she took Fern to the hospital. Billie had the vet for the cow and moved her back to her old stall and she is much better. Doing okay, eating good etc.

Tuesday, March 1, 1977 LLOYD TO ANDREWS NURSING HOME

A nice day, not quite as warm. I done up regular work. I made a cake and done my figuring. Today at about noon they moved Lloyd from the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital to the Andrews Nursing Home in South Paris. Susan, Fern and I went over to see him in p.m. He is about the same, no change at all. Betty had company all day. I ironed today.

Wednesday, March 2, 1977 Carmen home

A nice day, a little cool. It is late March weather. Carmen home with back trouble. Betty and Carmen to the doctors. She pulled a muscle which pained her a lot. I cooked a chicken. Done some other jobs.

Thursday, March 3, 1977 $213 $92.80

Another very beautiful day. I done up some of my work, down to Betty’s for an hour or so. She went to the dentist in Portland, got home before noon. I washed clothes, windows, floors, done up the housework. In p.m. Betty and I went to town. I did some shopping and Betty did too. Joy called Betty late tonight. She is very home sick and in quite a nervous state of mind.
