The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 29 - February 1, 1977

Saturday, January 29, 1977

Well it wasn’t too bad after the storm of last night. Roads all plowed and cleared good. I made bread and a cake. Betty called about 9:45 to say we could go to Portland to do Carmen shopping and have Kim’s eyes checked as we had previously planned. So we did, Dorothea went with us. We was very late getting home.

I done up my regular work. Did my wash, changed all the beds. Fern came up in PM. She stayed for supper. It has been quite a nice day, not too cold. Betty and Walt called also.

A sunny day, on the cold side as usual. I went down to Betty’s, we cleaned her house. Susan was there. It was some windy. The cold and bad weather still keeps on.

Tuesday, February 1, 1977 Carmen haircut

A nice day except windy and that makes it cold. I didn’t go out anywhere today. Betty went down town shopping. Bill didn’t do much today either. I got my reading caught up and worked on the puzzle. The storm has finally stopped in and around Buffalo, New York, about a week all told of heavy snow and blizzards there. It has been very bad. A lot of suffering, no accumulation in a lot of areas. Carmen over to June’s and got her hair cut. She looks so much better.
