The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 21 - 24, 1977

Friday, January 21, 1977 MILDER

 

It has been a much warmer day. Kind of a hazy sky. I washed clothes, washed windows and done my dusting. Betty up and we played the bingo game. Betty took chair down to Carmen to rock in at the Rockathon at school. Betty Smith called tonight. She is sick with shingles. Carmen rocked all the eight hours.

 

I wonder what could be in the grain box?

 

 

Saturday, January 22, 1977

 

A beautiful day. I did a wash, cleaned up the house. Made molasses cookies and brownies and beans. In p.m. went to Portland with Betty and Fern. We picked up Dorothea. Lloyd was real good today. His mind was good. Carmen and Zenya went too, they had a good time. Billie done his regular work. Took a long nap. Bill and Ilan fishing. Carmen got her new glasses. Walt and kids got to Dorothea’s and stayed till morning. Walt sick.

 

Sunday, January 23, 1977 20 – 25 above zero

 

A very nice day. Carmen up here early. She had caught Zenya’s horse and taken him home. It got loose and came over here to Carmen’s. Walt and the kids got home about 9:30. Walt was better. I did a dite of wash. Did regular work. Bill went fishing alone. Billie up to Chet’s, his legs are bad. Carmen rode Angel. Kim and Zak were up here a little while. Lloyd all upset today.

 

 

 

Monday, January 24, 1977

 

A very nice sunny mild day. I did some wash, clothes dried good. I worked on the puzzle. Bill and Ilan up fishing. Dawn down to Betty’s.
