The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 30 - June 1, 1982 Memorial Day

Sunday, May 30, 1982

A cloudy rainy miserable day but we needed at for the gardens which is for the best we got all the rain. I didn’t get up until 7:30. I got breakfast. David came. Had coffee. Talked. I done up the work. Betty, Dorothea and Zak came. Bill and I went with them, went looking for antiques. Betty got some chairs. Dorothea got a few things, we had looked over at Oxford then came home. Kim was here sleeping. She is so tired. She went to work at 9:30, got home at 2:30. Zak called. Kim up in PM and slept. She is staying all night.

Monday, May 31, 1982 Memorial Day

When we got up this morning it was still raining and foggy. Kim stayed all night. David came again this morning. Billie went up to Farmington with Howard Millett. Kim went home about 10 or 11 AM then went up to Dawn’s to work on her dress or blouse. Carmen came up for lunch and visit. I went down to see Ebony. She looks so good or so much better. She has been through a terrible wicked ordeal. If she hadn’t got the care that Betty has given her she would be dead by now. Lida and Weldon on a trip overseas.

Tuesday, June 1, 1982 CARMEN TO WORK

Well another miserable day. It rained. It was partly cloudy. I done up the work. I did some washing. Cleaned up the house. Betty called, we went down and got Fern, went to the cemeteries. Then took Fern up to Dorothea’s. She saw the new shop. Thought it was very nice. Then came home and Betty showed her the chickens. They came up here and spent the day. She liked the house. I made a pie, baked a ham but had a good supper. Carmen and Betty came up in evening. What a wild exciting day for Carmen. Her first day at work. Wooley on the old ladies.
