The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 2 - 5, 1982

Wednesday, June 2, 1982

Well it down poured all night and all forenoon. Awful hard. In PM it cleared. I did the refrigerator, stove and did the ironing. I sat down and watched the TV soaps today. First time for about two weeks. Carmen didn’t have to work because of rain. It seems good to have the cleaning all done. Cindy after milk.

Well finally some sun yet it wasn’t a perfect day. Kind of cloudy and hazy at times. Betty took us to town. Then in PM I went down and helped Betty to make a double batch of root beer. Fern got a permanent and down to Fern’s for PM and supper. Checks came. Carmen worked.

I did a wash. I ironed and was busy all day. It was cloudy and some showers. I got the things out of the cleaners. Went to town. Bill sat in the house most all day except he was up to Dorothea’s a little while. He called at Betty’s also. Bill took Delores and I to town to cash checks. Mowed lawns.

Saturday, June 5, 1982 Zak on a bike-a-thon

It sure rained all day hard. I baked some white beans, made a cake and a rhubarb pie and rolls. Done up the work. Carmen, Kim called, they both got their Haircuts and they look so nice. Kim to work tonight. She is so late getting home. 2 AM before she got home from last night. Betty and Walt called in evening. Also Dorothea. Bill got a crow tonight and hung it up out in the corn to keep them out of the garden. Zak on a bike-a-thon trip. He went 24 miles. He got soaked through, it rained so hard.
