The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 24 - 26, 1982 NEW Cranberry Red Wall Phone

 

Monday, May 24, 1982

 

It was cloudy and showery and real heavy in PM. We need the rain. I did a big wash. Betty came up, we cleaned kitchen cupboards. And she cleaned rest of windows. The kitchen is done and looks very nice. Carmen and Billie went to Portland for Dr. appointment for Billie. Carmen drove for him, came home. I had a boiled corned beef and cabbage, hot rolls and raspberry turnovers supper. Carmen liked it so well. We all did, it was such a nice piece of corn beef. Also Betty Smith and her niece called. They have been to Canada to visit relatives.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 25, 1982 New Phone

 

Did the cellar. It was cloudy when we got up. But it cleared in forenoon and it turned out to be a beautiful day. We cleaned the cellar and what a mess it was. Dave called this morning. Billie washed or sprayed the walls and floor. I cleaned all the things down there. We had Dorothea and Betty come and they hauled a mess of stuff off. Today the telephone man came and we got a brand-new cranberry red wall phone. Carmen and Lisa up for breakfast. Then they went fishing. Then she came back and Carmen painted the bathroom 4 coats, it looks very nice, a pale yellow.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 26, 1982

 

I washed and did some ironing. Betty came up and she went up over head in the breezeway and cleaned it up for us. So we will have more space to store things. It was so hot. Garden is coming good. I cleaned the breezeway, it looks some better.
