The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Well it got cloudy and cold today for the first day of the month. I done up my Saturday regular work. Swept, dusted, washed floors, did some cooking etc. Billie busy all day and Bill went with Dorothea after antiques. Joy went too. Kim called. Ilan called. I didn’t do any cleaning but I did wash.

A nice mild sunny day. I done up my regular work, got up at seven after sleeping in. Dorothea and David called. They had bought some things. Then Heidi and I took a walk down to Betty’s. It is so pretty down there. We took a ride over into the pasture and down where they are fencing. Monica and Ashley Bardsley called this morning. I wrote to Esther and Carmen, made out the bills. Got the picnic table and swing set up.

Monday, May 3, 1982 $149.20 $339.30 equals $488.50

Billie turned out all the cows today. All of them. The others had been out some. Billie finished up down to Walt’s today, the fencing. Bill worked at the camp’s today. I washed and ironed, did some desk work. Ironed on porch for first time. Bill smoothed up the yard and Walt’s. Zak took his project to school.

Tuesday, May 4, 1982 Bill to Dr. Miller for checkup on eye

When we got up it was raining. It rained by showers all night. It cleared up so it was quite nice. Today Dorothea took Bill down for an eye checkup. It is coming good. He has the eye transplant in the eye he learned today. Fern and I down to Betty’s today and helped her do her dishes in the dining room. Billie got the tractor out and oiled.
