The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 17 - 20, 1982

Monday, May 17, 1982

A very nice day except it was a wind, very mild and warm 70 degrees. I did a big wash and some of the winter things I washed too. Also a few other odds and end jobs. I cooked a roast beef for supper, made custard. Carmen came up. She wanted to mow but her mother would let her. Bill and Billie hauled dressing. Ebony is improving. Kim called after supper. She looked very tired.

A quite nice day, I cleaned the two bedrooms, did washing. Bill fix Betty’s refrigerator for the camp. Billie did all the windows on the outside. What a good job done. Carmen called a couple times. Kim called after supper. Today Betty’s tenants for the shelter came. Weary’s. They just came from Alaska after making a few stops at their folks on the way. They moved their things in at Linscott’s as that is where they will live. Also moved some of the things from Betty’s barn to the shelter.

Wednesday, May 19, 1982 Bedrooms

A very nice day, mostly sunny, some haze. Well today Betty, Carmen and Dawn painted the two bedrooms and they look very nice. Ours is a buff. Billie’s is a dark tone tan. I had Dawn stay for supper. In evening Betty, Dorothea, Susan and all the kids took Fern and I to the movies to see Golden pond. It was very good and we liked that and appreciated it very much. Billie washed the kitchen ceiling and walls today. That is ready for painting.
