The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1982

Saturday, June 26, 1982

I done up the Saturday work. Made a cake and made bread and rolls. Baked red kidney beans today instead of the white beans. Fern came up in PM and here for supper. She stayed all evening, enjoyed her supper and glad to get away for a little while. Billie finished his lawns. Bill up to camp a little while. It cleared off good and on the warm side.

He was bailing hay at Grace’s. Kim, Dorothea went to the Allen reunion at Evergreen Valley. Carmen tended shop for Dorothea. Kim didn’t work. Carmen called in the evening. Betty, Dorothea and kids all went to the movies.

When we got up it was raining but it stopped then just cloudy than another couple rain showers. Later in the forenoon it cleared off. This miserable weather we are having is due to the volcanic eruption they had in Mexico. I hope they don’t have anymore. I did a wash. Made cupcakes and Jell-O. Bill and Betty got the paper on the roof up to the camp.

Tuesday, June 29, 1982 thundershowers and heavy rain

A miserable day. During forenoon it was just cloudy but in PM the rain came. It rained so hard. I done up regular work, ironed, made a macaroni and cheese and a coconut pudding. Betty and Zak called and Carmen in evening. Carmen didn’t work today. Bill up to camp and worked some then he fixed the door here in the PM. Billie in and out, called at Fern’s, went to town, let the heifer out.
