The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 18 - 21, 1982

Friday, June 18, 1982

When we got up it was foggy about 10 AM it cleared and it was a very nice day, mild and sunny. I done up regular work, vacuum, dusted, made some cookies. Watched soaps. Carmen and Zenya made a dooryard call. Then Carmen called in PM. Billie down to Fern’s. After supper we went down to see the chicks house etc. Kim didn’t have to work. Bill and Betty up to the camp. Kim’s class went to the movies this afternoon for a reward for having the best attendance in school all year. They were going on a picnic but the rain prevented that.

Well a fair day. Sun got out and it was a pretty good day. A little cloudy in PM with the threat of showers. I done up regular Saturday. Betty came, we went up to camp with the kids. It looks good. Walt worked all day.

Well a fair day except it was quite a windy and a lot of wind clouds and sunshine all day. It was good to see so much sun. I didn’t get up till seven. I got the breakfast, did up all the regular work. David called. Kids came up. Late in PM Joy and Laurie came and brought the chicken house over. Billie over to Brownfield with Wes. Bill got the car up finally. In evening Betty, Carmen, Zak and Dorothea called for Father’s Day. Bill got $20 from Billie, fishing pole from Dorothea and Betty. Fishing supplies from kids. Betty and Walt out for supper.

Another one of those dreary rainy, sunny, cloudy, thundershowers days. I did my washing, went down to the school with Betty to get Kim. This is the last week of school and they are taking exams. Billie put the hen or chicken fence up today. Bill and Betty up to camp. Carmen called and Dorothea. She had bought a big load of furniture, good old antiques. I had a roast beef supper and had a couple rhubarb pies. Awful showers in late PM.
