The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 23- 25, 1972 It's Christmas!

Saturday, December 23, 1972

Cloudy and rainy. I done regular work and some Christmas preparations, went to town. Linda Weymouth and Ian MacCloud married tonight.

Sunday, December 24, 1972

Partly cloudy. I did a lot of last-minute things for Christmas, cooked also. In evening we all went to Fern and Lloyd’s for their opening of their gifts. They were pleased with their things. Then they all came up here and we opened our gifts. Had a good time. Dorothea, Dave and Jeff came about 11. They had been down to Dave’s father and mother’s for their Christmas. They stayed here tonight so to go down to Betty’s tomorrow.

Monday, December 25, 1972 Cloudy, Rain

A cloudy and rainy forenoon then it stopped storming, but it was cloudy. Up early, got ready, down to Betty’s about 7 AM. We got the turkey in and then they began opening the gifts. They all got a lot of very nice gifts. We sat down at one thirty to a very nice turkey dinner. I got so many very nice things from my family. Electrolux sweeper, dresses, can opener (electric), shoes, towels, washcloths, diary, aprons. A very pretty comforter for our bed. Bill got an antenna for his colored TV, new pants, shirts, ties, a bench grinder, Schlick razor. Billie got a new grass trimmer, a new TV.

WHY?????

You can't unsee this!
