The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 7 - 10, 1972


Saturday, October 7, 1972 HEAVY RAIN

It was raining hard today all day. Some wind. Done up regular work. Cleaned out in back of refrigerator. Cleaned shoes. Billie, Kim and I cleaned up the cellars. I did my mending. Got supper. Hortons came up in evening. Billie much better. Kim here tonight.



Sunday, October 8, 1972

Clear this morning and a nice day. It was quite warm. I done up the work. Kim here this morning. Carmen came up. Betty, Walt and Zak went for a ride up to Cold River with Fern and Lloyd. I went down there in late p.m. with the kids. Bill did some cultivating.



Monday, October 9, 1972

Up early, it has been a beautiful day. I was going to wash instead I went to Portland with Betty shopping. Dorothea went too. Bill finished painting the woodwork at Betty’s.



Tuesday, October 10, 1972 Bill worked at Walt’s

A nice day but cold and windy. I did my washing. Zak up here. Bill and Betty papered Betty’s hall. I took Zak. Milan and Betty came about 10 o’clock. Milan and Betty had supper at Betty’s. Esther and Cliff called in evening.
