The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 27 - 30, 1972


Friday, October 27, 1972 very mild and sunny

A pretty nice day. I washed windows, did a dite of washing. Bill gone down to the barn where Gordon and crew were building a barn onto a house for the Momm’s to live in. Betty, Zak and I took a nice long walk way down through the woods. I enjoyed it so much. First time I been down there for about five years or possibly six. Went to town shopping first thing this morning.





Saturday, October 28, 1972 Susan at Esther’s, she is very sick

Susan went to the hospital with a very bad case of strep throat. In oxygen isolation and feeding her intravenously. Betty very sick with stomach trouble, diarrhea. I had Kim all day. Carmen here tonight to stay all night. It was a cloudy dreary day, some rain showers. Billie down to Lawrence.



Sunday, October 29, 1972 Rain

A very rainy day. Carmen here all day. We didn’t do much. A long long day. Betty still not feeling too good but is better. Billie here most all day. No callers. Esther down to see Susan, she is still very sick.



Monday, October 30, 1972

A very nice sunny day. Betty, Zak and I and we took Vince all went to Portland. Betty had to get some groceries and other things. She took her headphones back to V (?) House, they are going to get new ones. Came home, got supper. Billie called at Fern and Lloyd’s. Betty called there. Walt and kids made jack-o’-lanterns. Bill and I went down to see them. Bill down to Gordon’s most all day. Carmen didn’t feel too good, home from school at noon. Billie to dentist. They took x-rays of his teeth. He may have to have them out.
