The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 23 - 26, 1972


Monday, October 23, 1972

A cloudy dreary rainy day. Billie went with Lawrence, didn’t get home till real late. I done up regular work, down town. Betty’s folks have company all day. We watched TV all afternoon.



Tuesday, October 24, 1972 $30, mild

Cloudy in a.m., it cleared mostly and sun out part of the day. I got my work done early. Bill, Betty, Zak and I all went to Portland to do some shopping. Bill bought him some new clothes. Betty got Zak some new clothes, jacket etc. Cliff called at supper time and brought a few boxes of canned goods over to put in the cellar. Sal up in evening, we saw the pictures of the wedding. Betty, Zak and I called at Ferns a little while. After a long cold spell it was very mild. I did a dite of washing after supper. Kids back-to-school and people back to work and things open after the day off.



Wednesday, October 25, 1972 $75.00

Bill down to Jean’s to work. He got a check from Mrs. Bradford, $75. We went to town in p.m. Lloyd up a little while.


Thursday, October 26, 1972

I did washing and ironing. Cleaned up the house. I went to town for milk. Esther and Cliff over tonight a little while.
