The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 1 - 4, 1972


Friday, September 1, 1972 Bill worked at Walt’s, Lila died this morning, $75

A very nice day, on the hot side. In a.m. Betty took me to town to shop. In p.m. I helped her to get cleaned up upstairs. Came home, cooked a fish supper. Kim up tonight all night. Got word tonight Lila Allen Walsh died this morning. She was in Florida with Thena. On February 4 of this year Lila had a brain operation and never regained consciousness.




Saturday, September 2, 1972 MY FIRST SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK CAME $60.90

Partly cloudy. I went down to Betty’s after I got my work done. Cleaned up the downstairs, washed a few things etc. I made molasses cookies and some bread and rolls, baked beans. Carmen up here tonight. Dorothea called, Jeff is coming tomorrow night. Betty and I to town after supper.



Sunday, September 3, 1972 Bill worked at Walt, JEFF CAME HOME

Cloudy and showers. It was cloudy and rain showers today. I done regular work and had Zak up. Bill worked at Betty’s. Billie mowed grass in the garden. We had awful heavy rain and showers today. I didn’t do much. Betty went with her family down to Ferns for supper. Tonight Thena came to Portland by plane with Lila’s body. Jeff came home tonight.



Monday, September 4, 1972

A nice day after the awful showers of yesterday. I did some washing. Bill worked at Betty and Walt’s.
