The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 8, 1972 Back to School


Tuesday, September 5, 1972

A nice day, quite hot. Betty and I to Norway in a.m., in p.m. went to Lila’s funeral. We went to Lida and Weldon’s after the funeral. In a.m. Bill worked on the windows at Betty’s.



Wednesday, September 6, 1972 SCHOOL BEGAN

Carmen and Kimberly up early and got ready for school. Carmen the fourth grade, Kim the first grade. They looked very nice when they got ready to go. I was down to Betty’s helping her today.






Thursday, September 7, 1972 Zak to Doctor

Another beautiful day. I done up my work. Betty mowed lawns. I had Zak. He was very sick, fever and abdominal pain. She took him to the doctors. He examined him. He has to go back tomorrow. Horses got out. Bill worked at Betty’s on the windows outside.



Friday, September 8, 1972 $80.00

Today I done up my work. Down to Betty’s. It rained. Betty took Zak to the doctors, he has a kidney infection. He has been sick for so long off and on. Bill worked at Walt’s painting. I helped Betty to get some things moved upstairs. Betty took me to town shopping today.
