The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cloudy and rained hard. Bill worked on Jean’s birdhouse down cellar. I done regular work. Esther came over, she and I fried a batch of homemade donuts. They were quite good. Bill and Billie didn’t like them. In p.m. Esther and I went to Norway with Betty. It rained so hard all day. Walt took Betty’s car in and had it checked over.

A beautiful day. Bill worked on Jean’s birdhouse. I went down to Frances’ with Fern and Lloyd. Esther went too. She was so pleased to have us. In p.m. Bill took me to town. I got my clothes in, ironed. Wrapped a few Christmas gifts and made a cake. Kim up a minute. Betty to Doctor for a complete physical checkup. Also Carmen went for a throat check up. Kimmy has a sore throat tonight.

I done up regular work. I washed, it was cloudy off and on most of the day. Some breeze so my clothes got dry. Bill worked on Jean’s birdhouse. In p.m. I went to Lewiston with Betty to take Zak to the doctor. Esther went with us too. About dusk heavy clouds settled in and it was very cold. Soon after we got home at began to snow.
