The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 1 - 4, 1972

Friday, December 1, 1972 Betty got permanent, nice sunny day, cold

Our bare ground all gone again this morning. About 10 inches of snow. Bill plowed here and at Walt’s. No SCHOOL. I stayed with the kids while Betty went to June’s and got a permanent. In evening Betty, Esther and Cliff called. This afternoon Lloyd was in a mishap. Lisa Smart’s horse balked and ran into Lloyd’s car and put him into the ditch. No one hurt.

Saturday, December 2, 1972 Sunny when we got up

A pretty nice day. I did not bake beans. I done regular work, worked on Christmas things. Lloyd called. I washed kitchen floor. Bill plowed snow and took me to town in late p.m. Then I went down to Betty and Walt’s for supper and to babysit, while they went down to Dawn’s. Good report from Judd. They like him very much and want to keep him.

Sunday, December 3, 1972

I changed my beds, did regular work. Cooked corned beef supper. Muriel Sykes, Fern and Lloyd called, also Betty and Walt and kids.

Monday, December 4, 1972 To Portland

Betty and Zak and I went to Portland grocery shopping etc. Came home, had a most delicious chicken dinner, Col. Sanders. Betty bought it for me. We called at Dorothea’s. It was late when we got home.
