The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 21 -24, 1972


Thursday, September 21, 1972

Clear today. I went down to Betty’s a little while. The puppy got into the hen house today and killed one. Betty, Zak, Esther, Monica and I went looking for hens or pullets. Couldn’t find any. Billie got haircut tonight and I went down to Ferns. Betty and Esther also there.



Friday, September 22, 1972 Got word Beat died Monday

Cleared today. Bill took me to town to shop. I done regular work. Made sweet cuke pickles. In p.m. Bill and I went for a long ride. Looked at a couple Scout jobs. Bill wants to trade. Jean got a letter from home and Beat died Monday and was buried Thursday. She was cremated. Betty called at Dawn’s.



Saturday, September 23, 1972

A beautiful day. I done up regular work. Zak came up for a little while. Betty and Walt went over to Harrison for a little while. I baked beans, made creampuffs, some biscuits. Billie worked for Lawrence. Bill changed the tires on his car. I finished up my pickles. Quite cold, on the windy side. Betty and Walt called. Fern, Lloyd up in evening. Bill mowed lawns.



Sunday, September 24, 1972 cloudy, Heifers went today

I done up regular work. Randy and Ilan called. Lawrence Boynton called. JOAN WESTON died yesterday. Billie went with Lawrence to pick up cattle. Betty and Walt cleaned up their garden today. Went out to supper with Fern and Lloyd, their 44th wedding anniversary.
