The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 19 - 22, 1972

Thursday, October 19, 1972

A fair day, I went to town with Betty. I did my windows inside and put up my winter curtains in the living room. In p.m. Betty and I to Norway a little while. Came home, got supper. In evening we went to the funeral parlor. Later called at Ferns. Susan MOVED tonight.

Friday, October 20, 1972 Herman’s Funeral

A very nice day. Bill didn’t work. I went to town shopping. In p.m. Betty and I called at Esther’s. She is very much relaxed with the kids gone and Susan. Last night was the first time Esther, Cliff and Billie were alone since they came from their visit to Ohio. Today Herman Cook Brackett was laid to rest at Lakeside Cemetery in Casco. Most of the family went. Bill stayed with Zak, Dorothea came up to the funeral.

Saturday, October 21, 1972

A nice sunny day. Billie with Lawrence down country. Bill to town for antifreeze for car radiator. Dorothea came. We went down to Betty’s so she could see the house. She said it looks so nice. Also looked at snapshots. Then she and I came back home and got some lunch. David came from the garage (Rudy’s). Carmen and Kim had company. Kathy Smith, Maureen Momm and Martha Coombs. I went down in p.m. while Betty took Carmen to Norway to get her some shoes and boots. Walt worked. Fern and Lloyd out to supper, Edes Falls then called here.

Sunday, October 22, 1972 Zak has K infection

Cloudy and rain. Esther and I took a ride up to North Conway to Giant’s. She did some shopping. Bill and Billie cleaned out the well down to the spring. Lloyd down there with them. In p.m. Billie went with Lawrence. We called to see Zak in evening. He has a touch of his kidney infection, first one for a long time.
