The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, December 16, 1972

Cloudy and stormy when we got up. It cleared in forenoon. Bill plowed Walt and our driveways. Billie did some shoveling. In p.m. Bill went down to Gordon’s but not for long. Billie down to Lawrence’s slaughter to help butcher. Kimmy to a couple of parties this p.m. Carmen and Betty up here, we decorated the tree. It looks nice. Wind blowing quite hard tonight.

Sunday, December 17, 1972 WINDY

A beautiful day. I took bath, changed beds, done regular work. Made out a few cards. The wind is blowing hard, it has been all day. Didn’t do much. Got ready, went down to the kids Sunday school with the Horton’s to the kids Carmen, Kimberly and Zak’s Christmas party. It was very nice. I went down to see the Christmas tree at Betty’s when I came home. Very pretty.

Monday, December 18, 1972 Very cold, $50

It has been very cold all day. I got ready, did my washing. Went down to Betty’s. She, Esther and I went to Conway to grocery shop. Got home about three. Got my clothes in, that wind dried them pretty good. I got supper. Billie and I went down to Dorothea’s. We had a nice visit. Came home, brought home some of her gifts and delivered them to Fern and Betty’s. In p.m. Betty and I went to town in p.m. Bill got a Christmas card from Jean, $50 check.
