The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 8 - 10, 1990 Billie Hurt

 

 Saturday, September 8, 1990

 

 A very nice sunny day, on the coolest side. I baked beans today. Made the squash pie. Also some rolls, the yeast didn't work. David came for coffee and here till 11:00 a.m. Billie mowed his lawns. Carmen came and wanted to know if I would like to go to Cornish. I did, had a very nice pretty ride. She went to the country antique store. I went down to Betty's after supper to see Brogan's new bed. Betty, Walt and Brogan went to New Hampshire to get her new mattress. She had such a good time. Dorothea down here today. She cut Billie's nails.

 

 

 

 Sunday, September 9, 1990 Billie got hurt

 

A quite nice day, a dite hazy at times. I done up regular work. Wrote to Esther. Carmen came for a little while in forenoon. She, Betty and Dorothea all went antique shopping down to Cornish to the antique shops. Billie and Jason went down to Windham to get fence post for he and Betty. Brogan stayed with Walt, they had a blast. Today Billie was cleaning out the truck and he fell off and hit his head and back on the side of the door on the truck where the door goes up, got cut. Hit the cement floor, he was knocked out for a while. His whole right side was hurt and lame. Carmen came and fixed him up tonight. Kim made a visit, a good long one.

 

 


 Monday, September 10, 1990

 

Cloudy and raining when we got up. Later in forenoon it cleared away and the sun came up and rest of the day the sun shown. David came to see Billie, here a long time, had coffee. Billie had to get ready to go to the ear doctor. I did a washing. I didn't do anything in PM except to look over some clippings etc. Walt sick again today. He had to go away to meet someone, came home still sick. Carmen busy all day. Betty met someone up to the shelter to see about a heating system into shelter.
