The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 14 - 17, 1990 Billie's Eye Cataract Surgery

 

Tuesday, August 14, 1990 new table and chairs

 

A nice sunny day, very comfortable temperature. It was very nice. Done up my work and did odd and end jobs. Betty came and we went up to the shelter were Carmen was picking over Brogan toys and moving her into her little log cabin play house. It looked very nice and Brogan was very pleased with it. I came back, as we were driving out we had a chance to see Kim and Tom. Well Betty and Carmen decided to get a table and chair set for me for my porch. It was a very nice set, glass top and brass legs on table and chairs. I am so pleased with it.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 15, 1990 Billie to Dr. Reed for Eye Operation

 

A beautiful day. Billie to Portland to Dr. Reed’s office to have his last cataract removed. I’m so glad, he has waited for a long time to get it done. I hope he will have good luck and can drive and do things, read etc. While they were gone this morning I did a washing, made brownies etc. They got home early at 11 AM. All was over and feeling okay. We are all relieved it is over. Dorothea and Betty came in to see Billie. Carmen had a very nice supper again.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 16, 1990 good news Zak

 

Billie back to eye Dr. (Dr. Reed). It is doing well. He will go back for a week, August 22. I am so glad it is over and I’ll be glad when it is all healed. Which will be a week. They got home at about about 10 AM. Today Kim’s engagement picture in the paper. It is beautiful. Well today I got very good news from Betty about Zak. He is doing very well and bettering himself very much. I am so praying for him to get fully recovered.

 

 


 

Friday, August 17, 1990

 

HOT today. Well I did odd jobs today. Carmen came and cleaned the house. It looks nice. Carmen been busy all day. Kim to work early tonight. Betty very busy cleaning her house and getting ready to go to camp tonight. Carmen and Charlene out this evening. Brogan down to Walt’s to stay all night. Dorothea called this PM to see how Billie is getting along. His eye is doing okay. Jason here today and down to Betty Smith’s.
