The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 11 - 14, 1990

 

 Tuesday, September 11, 1990

 

 A very nice sunny day after the fog lifted. Sunny and very mild. Hot. I didn't do much. After Carmen came, picked beans and tomatoes. I worked on the shell beans. Had some for supper. Not a very good bean for shell beans. Carmen and Bro busy all day. Carmen help down to Betty's. Walt sick again. Billie doing odd and end jobs. His back is better now, thanks to Carmen for caring for him. Betty up today, had a sandwich. Dorothy is getting her bureau to going, it will look very nice.

 

 

Wednesday, September 12, 1990

 

Cloudy and raining then we got up. It was cloudy and foggy all day. I watched morning TV soaps. Carmen came, we canned tomatoes. Carmen to town and did the shopping, also many other errands. Betty cooked a smoked shoulder and cabbage. She brought it up here and we had it for supper here. Carmen made a mince pie, had that for supper also. Made one for Walt. Dorothea and Betty Smith up to New Hampshire today. Betty Horton had some one come to the shelter to give them an estimate on the heating system up there.

 

 

 

 Thursday, September 13, 1990

 

 A quite nice day, sunny, mild and hot at times. The man came and put up the TV antenna, a new one. It sure made a difference in the picture. Also Betty changed stands for me so the antenna channels could be beside me to run. Carmen came and cleaned. Brogan didn't like the change of stands. Carmen been busy today taking care of her hens, cleaning her hen house etc. Something got one of her Noodle and Soups last night. Dorothea and Betty S to town today. Billie doing odd and end jobs. Jason worked for Betty today after school.

 

 

 

 Friday, September 14, 1990

 

Cloudy all day. I didn't do much, odds and end jobs. Carmen and Brogan went to Norway Fair. Also Dennis and Ogden went. Brogan likes being with her brother. Brogan, Carmen and Brogan went to the fair in the evening. Brogan got to ride on the things at the fair free. She liked that. Dorothea called in evening. She went up to camp for a little while. Brogan came and showed us the things she got at the fair. Carmen brought me a box of homemade fudge.
