The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, July 9, 1990 HOT

A nice day, hot and clear, some clouds came on. David came down this morning for a few hours. Carmen came and worked today here and down to Betty’s. We shelled peas. Walt and Zack better. Zak worked at Centamore’s for the day. I did my washing and ironing.

Billie got the steers in this morning for the first time. He mowed all lawns. Zak to town today. I didn’t do much. Carmen came, we finished the peas. Then we combed Kassie out. She looks so much better. I watched TV in PM. Carmen took Brogan down to Westbrook to see the dinosaurs. Carmen back and brought some Kentucky Fried Chicken supper. Very good. Hot most of the day.

Wednesday, July 11, 1990 Carmen moved her chickens

It was kind of cloudy in a.m. Cleared in PM. Nice and sunny and mild. I cleaned some draws. Carmen cleaned the refrigerator and Kassie. She looks so much better. Carmen and Kim went to Oxford shopping. Last night they all talked at Betty’s about Zak’s problems. Tonight Carmen got her chickens up and in the new pen Jason made for them. I hope the foxes don’t get them.

A kind of cloudy day. Some sun, not too warm. Carmen had her shop open today, not much business. She came and got supper and done some odds and end jobs. Zak came for supper. He, Carmen and Brogan over to Old Home Days at Harrison. He and Walt are to leave at 3 AM for New York. A training home for Zak.
