The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Rained hard all day. I did a wash and ironing. Carmen came. Also got the supper. Betty and Dorothea here. Saw Carmen’s pictures of her trip.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 8, 1990 80 years TODAY, to Eye Dr.

 

Well I have been to the eye doctors office. I had eyes checked out. Then he told me I will have the cataract off so while right I got the physical and blood tests etc. So now I’ll be ready to go 27 of August. Well Carmen made a nice birthday cake and after in evening Betty, Walt, Dorothea, Betty Smith, Charlene all came and Brogan. A very very nice evening. Also a very pretty bouquet of flowers came from the family. Carmen busy all day driving us around.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 9, 1990

 

A quite nice day. I done up my morning work. Brogan up here. Also Carmen and Betty came. Carmen here and picked some things from her garden. In PM she and I went over to Oxford to get corn. She has been very busy all day. Took Minnie down to hospital for her usual treatment. She and Ilan are very poorly. Carmen got a very good supper, chicken barbecued, corn on the cob, string beans, cukes etc. It was so good. Billie mowed lawns also Betty mowed hers.

 



 

 

Friday, August 10, 1990 wrote to Zack and Es

 

Jason Knick birthday 14 years. This is been a mostly cloudy day, I dite of sun. Carmen came and cleaned. Kim came today for a little while. She and Tom over to Norway shopping. I wrote to Zack today, also to Esther. Zak is getting help and is improving. And happy where he is. And encouraged about himself. The house looks so clean after Carmen got cleaned. Betty and the rest are up to camp tonight. Growing Carmen out to supper with Zenya tonight.
