The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 4 - 6, 1990 Nanny's 80th Birthday Celebration

Saturday, August 4, 1990

Another awful hot day. I got my work done, did a wash, washed up the floors. Got caught up on the reading papers. No one around today. Gordon Sanborn’s death in the paper, he died yesterday. I’ll be glad when Carmen gets back on the main land. What a place. She leaves there at three. Expect Betty and Walt back today. It is a terrible hot day. It is a very lonely day. No one around. No call on phone from Betty Smith.

Sunday, August 5, 1990 a birthday call from Zack (phone) BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

A very hot day. A 80th birthday celebration. It was very nice and cool up there, had a delicious cookout. Hot dogs and hamburgers etc. etc. Kim had a delicious birthday cake. Betty, Walt, Kim, Tom host and hostesses. Dorothea, David, Fern, Joy and all the dogs in the family. They all went swimming. Later in PM Carlton, Phyllis, Brud and Verna came, all ate and visited. Then at a later time Carmen and Brogan came. All glad to see them. It was so hot. Well I got a lot of very nice and useful gifts. And money. The cake was delicious. This was the first time Tom had been to a family birthday. I was glad Carlton, Phyllis and Brud and Verna came. My phone call was a top gift. He sounded so good. I hope he succeeds. A very nice day altogether.
