The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 16, 1990

 

Friday, July 13, 1990 ZAK LEFT HOME

 

A quite nice day. It was nice and sunny when we got up. Walt and Zak left at about 4 AM to go to New York to a school for Zak to attend. The place wasn’t the kind of place for him to go. So he will come back. Carmen didn’t do much at the stand today. Dorothea called. Fern a dite better. Betty, Joy and Dorothea up to camp tonight. Carmen and Zak took Brogan to the Carnival at Harrison tonight.

 

 

Saturday, July 14, 1990

 

A nice hot sunny day. I done work and did a wash. Carmen came and got supper. Dorothea here again this PM. Charlene down to Betty’s this PM. Carmen came and got the supper. Brogan gone to her daddy‘s today. He came and got her this morning. Carmen didn’t do much, a dite of sales. Joy here and Susan this evening. Betty didn’t get her call from Walt and Zack until about 10 PM. Well Zack is gone to get much-needed help from himself which I hope and pray for him.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 15, 1990 AWFUL HOT

 

Mama’s 110th birthday

 

It has been a very very hot day. I got my checking account all fixed up today. I didn’t do much all day. Walt arrived back home at about 10:30 this morning. He was tired. Zack didn’t come, he is going to stay for a couple weeks. They all were at camp all day. Awful hot. Brogan came home at about 4 PM. I didn’t do any work. No one came to fix the furnace today.

 

 

 

Monday, July 16, 1990

 

Another hot day. I just done regular work. Carmen and Brogan here also Kim called for a little while. They gone up to camp again today. It is so hot. Carmen made a salad for supper. It was very good. Betty S, Betty H, Carmen, Kim, Brogan, Joy, Charlene, Cindy and nine dogs up to camp today. Wally came this PM and fixed the furnace again. A very very hot day. I watched TV in a.m. and p.m.
