The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, July 28, 1990

 

This is been a hot sunny day. I didn’t do much. Carmen came and got the supper. Barbecued chicken, green string beans and Swiss chard. All from Carmen’s garden. Also cukes and Esther made two apple pies. One we had for supper. Very good and sugar cookies. David here for coffee this morning. Nola, Kathy called with the baby and Phyllis. In evening Billie and Jane called, also Monica and Susan. Betty and Walt took a trip to his sisters today. They was in a motel for overnight and there for the day. Came home tonight.

 


 


 

Sunday, July 29, 1990 53 years Dorothea 53 years today

 

This has been another hot day. We done up the work. Esther made cookies. Also she did the ironing. I did the washing, not much going on. Carmen and Brogan called. Carmen and Kim busy getting ready for the anniversary party for Betty and Walt’s anniversary. Cliff and Esther took Billie and Jane out for lunch. Walt up for coffee. Phyllis, Verna and Mark Anthony called this p.m. The baby is growing so fast.

 

 


 

Monday, July 30, 1990

 

We washed. Esther made a angel delight. All of us went up to Dorothea’s tonight to take pictures with Fern. I got to see the new deck. David back to work tonight. Esther, Joy, Lorraine, Carlton, Phyllis, Brud, Verna, Betty Smith, Carmen, Brogan, Cliff and me had a very nice evening.

 


 

 

Tuesday, July 31, 1990

 

We did washing and ironing. Esther cooked. Kim and Tom called. Esther met Tom. Billie mowed lawns. Carmen came and picked vegetables.
