The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, August 21, 1990

 

A very nice day, on the not very hot side which we are very glad of. I made a squash pie this morning. Carmen gone to Oxford and did some shopping for birthdays and Laurie’s shower. Kim called a minute today. Betty and Brogan up here. David had a bad night at the hospital, a lot of pain. No one got down to see him. He may be home tomorrow. David didn’t come home from the hospital today. Still having pain.

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 22, 1990

 

Another very nice sunny day, beautiful. Billie and Carmen to Portland to see about his eye, if it is doing okay. Dorothea gone to Conway. Nutro system meeting. David came home. He is some better. Billie and Betty called on him in evening a little while. Billie’s eye is much improved. Carmen had company tonight. She and Brogan. It was Brogan’s grandmother, aunt and cousin Leslie. They had such a good time.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 23, 1990

 

Another quite nice day, more cloudy and not so warm. I sat on the porch a lot. I am trying to get my papers read before I go away Monday. Carmen here and worked. Got the delicious supper. I washed, made a Jell-O. Betty called a couple times today. David had a little more pain tonight, not too bad.

 

 

 

Friday, August 24, 1990

 

Fair, a lot of sunshine. I made a squash pie and washed. Carmen came and got a good supper. Baked finnan haddie, Swiss chard, broccoli, pie and nice biscuits she made. Betty called today for a little while. Billie doing very well with his eye.
