The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, July 21, 1990

 

A beautiful day. Not so hot. Well we got up and got the work done up. David and Elsa came down. Carmen and Brogan called. They went to Waterford Fair. Kim and Tom also went. I didn’t do much. Esther did a lot of cooking, very good. Cooking. Jane and Cliff came at about 6:30 or 7 PM. We were all glad to see Cliff after 10 years. He was tired. He was pretty pleased to see Billie up to Fort Devon’s today with Jane and the children. They had a cookout for the families of the guys who were out on maneuvers.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 22, 1990

 

Kind of a cloudy and partly sunny day. Some rain showers. Walt up for coffee and David here and had coffee. He helped Billie get the steer in for Anse Buzzell. He and Dave finally got him loaded. Esther, Cliff and Susan up to Dorothea and David’s today. They was pleased to see Fern also. Carmen hurt her back and had to go to the Dr. this morning.

 

 

 

Monday, July 23, 1990 RAIN TODAY

 

Well it began to rain last night and showery today. Carmen took Billie to Dr. Goldenhar this morning, in Es went shopping for things for the picnic up to camp for Wednesday. I hope Carmen will see her Dr. today for her back and be okay. Billie may have to have his ear drained.

 

 

 

Tuesday, July 24, 1990

 

Rainy day. Didn’t do much. Esther did a lot of cooking for tomorrow, got the sloppy Joe’s ready. I been washing. Esther did the ironing. Carmen called in today.
