The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 17 - 20, 1990 Daddy's Birthday, Esther Arrives

 

Tuesday, July 17, 1990

 

Another hot hot day. I listened to the programs. Well I washed, did the ironing. I the odds and end jobs. Carmen came and did some windows. Put the screens in. She changed Billie’s bed. She did errands and went up swimming a while. She made a chocolate pie, tarts and rolls. David came this morning. He may get his hay tomorrow.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 18, 1990 NEW STEER CAME, and Dave got half of his hay today

 

Another one of those awful hot days. I done some more odd and end jobs. Carmen came, washed the porch windows and other jobs. She went up to camp to swim. They all are enjoying every one of these hot days up there. Brogan is having such a good time. She is learning to swim. Carmen came, got the supper to going. After supper she came and got me. She and Brogan and I went up to see if David got his hay. He and Dorothea had just got it unloaded, they will get the rest this weekend. She went down town with Carmen, Brogan and me. We got ice cream at the Gazebo. Very good. Betty and dogs up for a visit tonight.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 19, 1990 HAIR SET

 

I got up early, took a bath. Got the breakfast. I got my washing done. Carmen came, we went down to Barbara’s. I got my hair set. Came home, did the ironing. Fixed my dresses. Watch soaps. They gone up to camp again for the day. Carmen here and got the supper. She worked in her garden after supper.

 

 

 

Friday, July 20, 1990 Walt’s 61st birthday, Esther and Cliff

 

Well I made a cake, first one for a long time. I also washed the door, strips and done a few other jobs. Carmen here put the finishing touches on, she vacuumed, cleaned the couch, other odd jobs and washed all floors. It looks very nice. Kim called, we don’t see her very much. Glad to see her. The Hortons are having a birthday supper for Walt tonight. Carmen and Kim are getting it. About 5:30 Brud and Verna came and brought Esther. Cliff staying up with Jane and family.
